Is Renerve Plus Injection Effective In Improving RBC Count?

Question: My father age 65 is suffering from CKD with creatinine level 2.6 and urea level 44. His hemoglobin count is 8 and he is anemic. Can we take Reserve plus injection weekly to improve RBC count?

I appreciate your concern for your father's anemia due to CKD.

As a matter of fact anemia in patients with CKD is due to lack of a hormone erythropoeitin (which is produced by the kidneys). So, to treat such anemia it is the recombinant human erythropoeitin that is given subcutaneously weekly or twice weekly to increase the RBC count.

Regarding Renerve plus injection, I would like to know for what purpose your father has been advised this injection.

Renerve plus is a multi vitamin and anti oxidant combination. It contains Methylcobalamine, inositol, alpha lipoicacid, calcium,chromium etc. It is usually prescribed for general well being and especially when there is weakness or inflammed nerves.

Hi Doctor, Thanks for the advice. Kindly suggest how much unit of Erythropoeitin injection we can take per week? please suggest tablets to reduce potassium levels. His potassium level is 5.1 and not reducing. Reserve plus injection suggested by a doctor few weeks before as he is weak and suffering from diabetic neuropathy. Thanks

Good morning.

Thanks for your valuable information regarding your father's illness.

Regarding the accurate dosage of Erythropoeitin, you have to consult a urologist or physician.

However, the initial recommended starting dose of Erythropoeitin for a patient with CKD;

On dialysis: 50-100 units/kg Intravenously 3 times weekly
Not on dialysis: 50-100 units/kg Intravenously/Subcutanesouly 3 times weekly

If hemoglobin level approaches or exceeds 11 g/dL, reduce or interrupt dose

Before starting Erythropoeitin:

1. Other causes of anemia should be investigated
2. Evaluate iron status before and during treatment, and maintain iron repletion
3. When initiating or adjusting therapy, monitor hemoglobin levels at least weekly until they are stable, then monitor at least monthly

Regarding his potassium level, it is within the normal range of 3.5-5.5 mEq/L.

At the most his dietary source of potassium like banana, orange, tomatoes should be avoided.
