Is TSH Value Of 5.88 A Cause For Concern?

Question: Dear Doctor,
My wife did her thyroid function test and her TSH was 5.88. We are trying to conceive now. we consulted several doctors one said to take Throxine 12.5 mg and other said to take 25 mg another doctor said to take 50 mg. We are confused now. What dose should she take. And after conceiving also should she continue taking Throxine?.
Thanks.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, The TSH is only very mildly raised. Normally no treatment is advised if it is under 10. Her level is only 5.88. But since she is trying to conceive, she may try 12.5 micrograms for a month and repeat the test. If necessary, she can continue. More important is to lose weight if she is overweight, and exercise regularly. This may by itself bring her TSH to normal. 25 micrograms is definitely not required. Hope my answer helped. If so please indicate that it did. You can revert back to me. Regards
