Is UTI And Horseshoe Kidney Together Life Threatening?
Question: My little girl who is nearly 5 has just been diagnosed following an ultrasound for a UTI with a horseshoe kidney - is this a life threatening or life limiting condition. Thank you
Brief Answer:
No, not at all.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Horseshoe kidney is one of the congenital malformation of the kidneys where lower poles of both kidneys are attached to each other.
But this is not something life threatening.Only such kindey is prone for injury in case of abdominal trauma and some time such individuals get more frequent urinary tract infections than normal individuals.but that can be very well taken care of.So no need to worry.
Only once in a while like say annually you can get an ultrasound done to see everything is fine.
Hope this helps. Please ask if there are doubts.Regards.

Hi
thank you so much for your responses - a final question I have which I have been unable to ascertain in my research is in the event that someone (a child) with a horseshoe kidney requires a kidney transplant is this available as an option, thank you

Brief Answer:
There is no need of transplant.
Detailed Answer:
Horseshoe kidney is functionally as good as normal kidney.Only its a structural anomaly.
So horseshoe kidney is per se not indication of transplant.Nor it is justified to get it done.
Only such patients are prone to infection and trauma. And this should be avoided or treated promptly.
Please dont worry.I have seen many healthy old aged patients who never knew that they had horseshoe kidney.
Best wishes to your daughter for a health life.
Regards
