Is A MPV Reading Of 6.9 A Cause For Concern?
Question: Is a low MPV of 6.9 significant?
Brief Answer:
if platelet count normal then would not be considered significant
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
MPV stands for mean platelet volume and refers to the average size of the platelets.
In most cases it is not interpreted on its own but along with the number of platelets.
Though your value is outside the range, it would not be considered to be significantly low at 6.9 especially if the platelet number is normal.
The normal range in 7.5 to 11.5 approximately in most labs.
If your platelet count is also low, then this would need further assessment to determine the cause.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

E.S.R. 1 HR is 16 mm/hr
MCV is 96.9 fl
MCH is 33.8 pg
MCHC is normal
FBS is 105 mg/dl (but HBA1C is normal @ 5%)
Vitamin D is 16.07 (I already started a supplement as per Dr's instructions)
Everything else is within range.
Thank you in advance.

Detailed Answer:
HI
Starting from the top
(a) total cholesterol, LDL, HDL are normally interpreted along with the risk factors for heart attack or stroke .This means - the presence of diabetes, high blood pressure, family history of heart disease, obesity, smoking etc
The higher the HDL , the better , since this is protective so the high HDL is good.
At 131,the ldl is borderline high. Improved diet and activity would help with this
(B) one of the most common reasons for increased liver enzymes at the moment is NON alcoholic fatty liver.
This means the build up of fat in the liver due to diet and non optimal activity
Other causes would be alcohol, infection , trauma etc
If due to NON alcoholic fatty liver then diet changes and activity of at least 150 mins a week would help
(C)ESR is fine. This is an indicator of inflammation in the body. This can be due to infection, allergies, cancer, trauma, autoimmune diseases (lupus, rheumatoid)
A very significant rise would indicate one or more of these.
Mild changes do not have any significance
(d)MCV, MCH, MCHC are interpreted along with the Hb. They are not interpreted on their own.
If the Hb is fine then there is no concern
If the Hb is low, increase in MCV and MCH may be due to vitamin b12 or folate deficiency, liver disease, thyroid disease, alcohol
(e)The HbA1c gives an indication of blood sugar control for 6 weeks to three months.
Not affected by diet.
The fasting may be affected by what was used the night before
Please feel free to ask anything else
will review for you

Once again, thank you.
For your responses A & B above, yes, I am quite a bit overweight and what would probably be qualified as obese. I am planning on changing my diet and increasing my activity levels. Due to my type of job, I have been quite sedentary and need to increase movement, I know that. In my younger years, I was very active, so this obviously bothers me.
(D) my HGB is 15.8 g/dl.
(e) Admittedly, I had rock melon which was extremely sweet the day before and a piece of cake.
Thank you for all your assistance.
