Is A Z-pack Better Than Doxycycline In Treatment For Mycoplasma?
Question: I was given 20 days worth doxycycline to treat mycoplasma but everything i read online says that zpak is more effective. is it safe to take them together? I have several boxes of zpak because it is over the counter here
Brief Answer:
doxycycline is better...
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
doxycycline is actually the preferred treatment for mycoplasma because of the increasing resistance of macrolides like azithromycin and others. If you've used it for 20 days then I guess you should be done by now!
Kind Regards!

I am only half way through my prescription but from what I read online was that only half were successfully cured with the doxy. It said that 1 gram dose of zpak was less effective then taking the zpak as a 500mg first day and then 250mg for four days but that taking the 500mg and 250mg had a 95% success rate. The conclusion I saw online was that the best was the zpak but it did talk about the risk of resistance to the zpak. That is why i feel like i should take them both to be safe. However, As I thought about this i thought could the zpak cause a resistance that would also make the doxy resistant. I don't know if that's possible or even makes sense so that is why I asked if they could be taken together. I will finish the doxy but i have a zpak sitting in my drawer and if zpak doesn't effect the doxycycline then I was just going to start takeing the zpak now while finising to doxy to be safe.
Brief Answer:
I believe that doxycycline is enough
Detailed Answer:
It is a fact that the recommended regimen for Mycoplasma pneumoniae is doxycycline 100mg twice daily for 7-10 days. Alternative regimens include the following:
- azithromycin (z-pak) 500mg on day 1 and 250mg once daily for the next 4 days (as you've already found on the internet)
- levofloxacin 750mg once daily for 5 days.
Doxycycline has achieved better cure rates than azithromycin. Despite that treatment with azithromycin is acceptable and considered reasonable and effective. Levofloxacin is also more effective than azithromycin.
I disagree using two antibiotics for many reasons.
Kind Regards!
