Is A Diagnosis Of Fat-containing Abdominal Hernia A Cause For Concern?
Question: My husband has been diagnosed with a fat-containing abdominal hernia. The doctor says that surgery is elective (e.g., presumably not covered by insurance); however, my husband has always had an active physical life, particularly regular work outs at the gym and wants to continue to have an actual life. Can he just ignore the hernia and do as he as always done, or does he now have to change his lifestyle, if no surgery?
Brief Answer:
hi and welcome to HCM
Detailed Answer:
it is hard to verify easily by clinical examination what hernia contains. if he didnt have any previous abdominal surgery, then this is probably fat containing hernia or abdominal lipoma or liparocella. in these cases there is no danger that serious complications can occur such as strangulation or incarceration. in case of real hernia that contains intraabdominal organs, he should avoid heavy weight lifting and it may cause problems in future. to determine what type it is exactly he should do ultrasound or CT scan. Wish you good health. Regards

He had a sonagram and it was confirmed as a fat-containing abdominal rupture. He usually does weight bearing exercises; are you suggesting that he cannot do that? Should he push for surgical repair in order to maintain his lifestyle?
Brief Answer:
hi
Detailed Answer:
Well, hernias should be repaired if cause difficulties. if fat containing hernia is confirmed then there is lower risk of complications comparing to other hernias, although, surgical repair is recommended because it will grow in future,it may cause pain and incarceration may occur. Since surgery simple and safe procedure today, and permanent solution with minimal risk of complications, I suggest to consider this option. It will take 4-6 weeks to recover and start normal activity, but then his problem will be solved forever.
