Question: Hello,
I was diagnosed with Hepatitis A on 01.08.13. Hepatitis B, C, E were negative.
Its been 6 months now, I have followed a healthy vegetarian diet. My LFTs are normal now, just ALT is marginally above the limit at 49.
I have done full abdomen ultrasound and liver is normal in size & appearance.
My doctor has said that I have fully recovered.
I would like to know if I can start having alcohol now? and what kind and what quantity is ok?
Can i have red meat?
Should I continue taking my liver supportive tablets like liveril forte & liv 52?
Thank you.
Brief Answer:
Yes you can go back to noraml dietary habits.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for asking question on health care magic.
Once you have recovered from your illness you can go back to your normal diet.
Usually it takes 6-8 weeks for recovery from hepatitis A.
Now already 4 months passed from starting of your illness, hence you can take meat as you like.
Regarding alcohol even for normal people it is harmful if exceed certain amount.
As you have recently recovered from viral hepatitis it is better to be away from alcohol as far as possible for a minimum period of 6 months.
Liver supportive medicines are not harmful if they are continued; if you wish to discontinue it you can do so.

Doctor thank you for your reply.
I was given first dose of hep b vaccine last week. Should I take any precautions since I have taken this vaccine.
Doctor u mentioned 4 months in your reply. But I was diagnosed on 01.08.13, so it has been six months. So is it ok for me to start having alcohol now. Also is beer n wine better as compared to other hard drinks?
Brief Answer:
No precautions needed.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks and welcome to healthcare magic with your followup query.
Yes it is 6 months since you abstain alcohol.
Better go with beer for some time and if you do not have any problem you may go for wine.
But always remember that alcohol is injurious to health.
Take little quantity at less frequent intervals so that you will not be addicted to it.
Remember to take good food after consuming alcohol.
No precaution need to be taken after hepatitis B vaccine.
Only thing is that you have to take 2nd and 3rd doses at 1 month and 6 months intervals respectively after the first dose.
Hope this reply will serve your purpose.
Please feel free to ask any query,I shall be happy to answer.
