Is Amino Acid Tablet A Better Option Over Protein Rich Food For A Patient With CKD?
Question: MY 68 year old son has CKD from 29 years of lithium he took for bipolar disease, and has to watch his protein intake. Can he take amino acid tablets, or is that just like eating protein?
Brief Answer:
aminoacids do not seem to cause trouble
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
if he has proteinuria then high protein intake may harm his kidneys. Aminoacids - the building blocks of proteins - do not seem to cause harm to patients with chronic kidney disease. Actually supplementation with essential amino acids has shown benefits for such patients.
