Is An MRI Scan Required For Diagnosing The Cause Of Hydrocephalus?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: dear doctor, i had a boy, he is just 1 year old for now. we found his ventricles (lateral and thrid) enlarged since he was 7 months old. and we followed up his status with ultrasonic scan each months for hydrocephalus symptom. in last 3 months, his ventricles kept stable and do not increased but were at high level for hydrocephalus (about 15 to 16mm for lateral ventricles and 10mm for third ventricle). i'd like to know what is his outcome with this status? we also took him for physical therapy since we found the issue. now he can seat and stand with support. what we should do for now? Is there any kind of medicine treatment? thank you very much for your help, regards
Brief Answer:
MRI brain should be done.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have noted your son's ultrasound and clinical details. I would prefer that he undergoes MRI brain to find out the cause of hydrocephalus. Most importantly, we need to exclude any obstruction in the CSF flow due to a condition called as aqueductal stenosis. If this condition is excluded, then, there is no need to worry. You should continue physiotherapy.
I sincerely hope my reply has helped you.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

dear doctor, we did MRI scan since we found his issue. there was no abnormal finding, just need follow up with hydrocephalus as the report. the ultrasound scanner suspected it could an issue of aquaductal stenosis at sylvius. however, cause the ventricle is stable, and not increased so do you think that we should continue to follow up or need a surgeon? and how long that we should follow up so that we can know for sure it's just a benign ventriculomegaly or not? thank you doctor, regards.
Brief Answer:
Please upload the MRI brain report.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Please upload the MRI brain report. After that, I can guide you whether or not to see a neurosurgeon, and regarding the duration of follow up needed.

The report is non english language, Iust got it translated from google. So it got some error, sorry for that.
Brief Answer:
I thought so.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Looking at the report, I guessed it was not prepared by a radiologist who knows English. As far as I can make out, there was no obstruction to the CSF flow and there is no pressure due to CSF on the adjacent brain. In this situation, there is no need to worry.
However, I would request you to get Neurosurgeon's opinion once.

Brief Answer:
Seen the images.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Yes, I saw the MRI images.
Ventricles are large, but there is no evidence of increased intracranial pressure. So, there is no need to see a neurosurgeon and there is no need for surgery.
Hope I have answered your query.
