Question: Is asbestosis a terminal illness? We understand it is not a cancer like mesothelioma but CT scans and XRays taken show pleural thickening and scaring at base of both lungs. Condition is getting severe, pains in chest not caused by heart however have had frequent lung infections and one heart attack from lack of oxygen. What is the life expectancy of patients with this condition?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I passed through your question carefully and would agree with you on the fact that this is a serious medical condition which predisposed the patient to a high risk for many complications like lung cancer, infections, COPD, etc.As such, it leads to a poor prognosis, with a high mortality rate after 5 years.

So to conclude, we can call it a terminal illness.
