Is Blood Pressure Of 124/86 With A Pulse Of 114 Normal?
Question: My bp is 124/86 and my pulse is 114. Before I took my bp, I was in my kitchen, working on something, when my heart started pounding, I broke out into a sweat, and I was lightheaded. It didn't help matters that my mother had hung up on me a few minutes before. Am I having anxiety issues?
Brief Answer:
Sounds like an anxiety attack.
Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
It sounds like you had a significant anxiety attack. Anxiety is associated with an adrenaline surge which can increase your bloood pressure, heart rate, and make you nausea, as well as increase your muscle tension, make you feel restless, irritable, short of breath, dizzy, and fatigue.
Pounding in your chest is also known as palpations. If you ever have palpations that are associated with chest pain or shortness of breath, then you should be evaluated by a medical professional. These could be signs of a heart attack.
I would recommend getting medication that will help your anxiety.
Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you Dr. Rebich.
What medication(s) are typically prescribed for anxiety, and will I have to see a physician to obtain prescriptions?
These episodes are happening more frequently (typically when I have to deal with my mother, who is the emotional equivalent of a mean-spirited two-year-old having a tantrum). I used to be able to deal with her more calmly, but over the last year, these episodes have manifested.

Brief Answer:
Many many medications. Full physical exam with blood work first
Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
I would highly recommend getting a full physical exam with blood work to ensure that there is no metabolic, electrolyte, or endocrine cause of your worsening anxiety.
There are many medications from Lexapro and Prozac to Ativan and xanax. There are medications that can help in the short term and long term anxiety.
They require prescription from a physician.
I would also recommend seeing a counsellor or therapist with your mother. This will help avoid medication and help build your relationship with your mother.
