Question: I just checked my blood pressure, and it is 168/85. I am 63 years old, on blood pressure medication, very overweight, had a TIA 2 1/2 years ago. Should I be concerned? I have had off and on chest discomfort since last night, and have been feeling very weak and fatigued today.

Brief Answer:
A visit to EMS and getting an EKG done is strongly suggested .

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,
The blood pressure you have mentioned , particularly the systolic ( upper blood pressure ) is slightly high,
ideally it should be less than 140 at all times .
However that should not be an issue of emergency concern . But with the history of TIA , it's better we control the same. You may consult your doctor and he would titrate your BP medications or you may let me know what you are taking and I can help you to tide our the present circumstance.

What I consider important here is the chest discomfort since yesterday , The blood pressure you have mentioned should not cause the same . I would strongly recommend that you visit the EMS or your doctor and get at least an EKG and necessary investigation done , as your age , previous TIA, hypertension puts you at higher risk of heart issues .

Let me know if any further help is needed and I would be happy to clarify .
Regards Dr. Mody
