Is Blood Pressure Value Of 88/58 A Cause For Concern?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jun 2016
Question: I was at the doctor's this morning and my blood pressure was 88/58. They were concerned and it stayed that low for about two hours. During the rest of the day my blood pressure was pretty typical, variations of 120/80 (slightly higher and slightly lower). The doctor at urgent care seemed concerned that it fluctuated this much and asked me to follow up with my primary care doctor the next day. I just noticed that it's already beginning to drop 113/69 and I'm not even asleep yet. I'm a bit afraid to fall asleep after how the doctor's reacted today! I was recently sick with the flu (two weeks ago) and am 38 healthy weight.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

I suspect that your blood pressure might have been on the low side due to a mild degree of dehydration. It is not uncommon for blood pressure to fluctuate from time to time during the course of the day.

If you are relatively athletic and in good shape normal blood pressure might run between 90 to 110 in the systolic range.

In your case I would recommend that you continue to monitor your blood pressure. I don't think your blood pressure is going to continue to decline progressively but it will fluctuate from time to time as mentioned above.

I would suggest that you monitor your blood pressure once or twice daily for the next couple of weeks and keep a journal of your readings.

if you are otherwise feeling well I do not see a major concern at this point.

Thank you again for sending your question.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
