Is Bursectomy Effective In Treating Trochanteric Bursitis?
I am about to turn 27 with chronic hip and lower back pain since I fell pregnant with my daughter 3 years ago. A hip specialist has diagnosed me with trochantric bursitis. I've been having cortisone injections with little relief, and I'm reluctant to take too many oxycodone tablets. Would a bursectomy be effective for me, or would the surgery make other problems since I'm so young?
Surgery can be done.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
In case of trochanteric bursitis, the first line of treatment is conservative with rest, anti inflammatory medicines and local steroid injections. Physiotherapy can help if the pain subsides with the above mentioned measures.
In your case since all these methods are not helpful it is best to consider a surgical treatment. An arthroscopic surgery is needed to drain the fluid from the inflamed bursa. It can be done at any age. Recovery from a bursectomy may take several weeks so the affected joint can rest. Bursae can easily become irritated with repetitive movements. Allowing the affected joint to move as little as possible for several weeks after surgery minimizes the risk that the bursa will be further damaged during the healing process. You may also receive prescription anti-inflammatory medications to take during recovery. After the joint has healed, most patients regain normal function, though therapy may be necessary to regain strength and prevent further injury.
I hope this answers your query.
