Is Consitently Low Vitamin D Levels A Reason To Be Concerned?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 May 2014
Question: Is having Vitamin D levels consitently around 30 (as per blood work) a reason to be concerned? I take PPIs twice daily (20 mg x 2) so I monitor the levels annually. Also, most of the times these tests are performed in the winter and I don't get much sun then. Since I am on PPI's for reflux, will even taking a vitamin get properly absorbed? I understand that 30 is on the lower end of acceptible.

Brief Answer:
yes it is of concern

Detailed Answer:
Continued low level of Vit d 3 is of concern. This vitamin helps in strengthening of the bones. Low levels prone the bones to osteoporosis or weakening of bones. The season of the test done usually does not matter, the test shows a steady state level and does not vary on daily or weekly basis. PPI surely reduce calcium absorption but effect on Vit D3 is controversial. If you are concerned, go for injectable form. The numbers will rise more quickly. Ask your GP for the prescription.
