Is Edema In Legs Symptom Of Cardiomyopathy?
Question: I have history of severe sepsis, stroke, AFib, multiple bilateral PE's. Have just been removed from Warfarin and put on Xarelto. Been having pretty bad edema in legs for three weeks and left arm with large mass under left armpit for several months. Shortness of breath still, PE's were 4 Sept 13. Mammogram is good and Doppler shows it is not a clot. Dr ordered a echo , did that yesterday. He said if blood work comes back ok, he will put me on a diuretic and something to regulate my heart rate. He mentioned several times he is concerned about Cardiomyopathy. Should I be concerned about this?

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that your treating doctor is right about the treatment decision and yes there exists a risk of cardiomyopathy leading to fluid overload and edema in legs which needs to be treated with diuretics . Whatever history you have provided suggests that you have been evaluated thoroughly and heading in right treatment .
You should not be concerned and worry about it but the treatment needs to be started if there is any evidence of decresed heart function in ECHO.

Thank you. Is there any evidence that Sepsis can cause residual heart issues? I never had any heartproblems until after i was septic.

Thank you. If i understand my csrdiologist correctly, cardiomyopathy can allow you live a normal lifespan as long as you take the correct meds and stay healthy .
