Is Exogenous Ketones Supplement Effective In Treating Lung Cancer?

default
Posted on Mon, 22 May 2017
Question: A close relative is dealing with lung cancer. Apparently Stage 1. She strongly prefers to take natural/alternative approaches to fighting it rather than chemo, radiation, or surgery. A trusted nutrition-related health consultant of ours has suggested exogenous ketonic supplements as part of a treatment strategy. Any thoughts on that? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Supplements are just preventive, not treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using Healthcaremagic to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

The dietary supplements (including ketonic ones) are used to prevent, rather then to treat a diagnosed cancer.
In the phase of recovering from chemotherapy, supplements can help to recover faster, but have no effect in treating a cancer.

The only 3 ways of treating cancer are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These are the only ways which are evidence based. In some cancers it is one or others more recommended.

In the case of stage 1 lung cancer, the best way which is recommended to treat that cancer is surgery, because stage 1 means that the cancer is localized and can be removed in healthy borders and so hopefully the patient will heal.
There is radiation therapy too which is recommended for some types of lung cancers in the 1st stage.

On the other side, I would not recommend to wait because stage 1 cancer goes bigger to stage 2 and so on. That means that the treatment of a more spread cancer is more invasive.

Hope this is helpful.
Let me know if you need more clarifications.

Apart from the issue of using ketonic supplements as part of an anti-cancer strategy, are you familiar with ketonic supplements, period? If not, fine. Just let me know. If you are familiar with them, what are your thoughts about them? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Ketonic supplements are used for weight loss.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Yes, I am familiar with them, but I haven't heard using them only for weight loss. I have even researched them online, and there is no evidence of using them for anything related to cancer.

The mechanism of action is low carb/high fat that lead the body to go into ketosis and so lose weight.

Let me know if that makes sense to you.

Dr. Papaqako
