Is Gallbladder Removal Necessary Before Laparoscopy For Fertility?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Dec 2014
Question: In my annual health checkup ultrasound showed gallstone of 5.5mm size (report attached). However this is a silent stone and i do not have any symptoms. All the other reports came out fine. There is no other health issue except minor thyroid and I take Thyronorm 25 mg daily.
I am planning a pregnancy - because of this the surgeon has advised to remove the gallbladder especially if laproscopy is being done for fertility treatment/evaluation.
I am not keen to get my gallbladder removed. I wish to know:
Q1. Is it necessary to get it removed?
Q2. If I do not get it done now, what are the potential risks to me and foetus and probability?

I am not getting clear answer from doctors here hence I am posting it at this site.

Brief Answer:
better to get it removed

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

Let me answer your query one by one.

1) it is necessary to get the gall bladder removed. This is because though now you are having no symptoms but during pregnancy it may cause pain or infection. There is no 100% rule to tell the chances of infection but around 30 % may develop. You may or may not be one among them.

2)if you don't get it removed now and if you get attack during pregnancy that time problems will be
-infection difficult to control
-sugery increase risk of abortion or fetal death
-difficult to give anaesthesia to you
-difficult to do surgery as abdomen will be occupied with growing uterus.
-antibiotics options reduce due to pregnancy.

So I suggest you to get the gall bladder removed and plan for pregnancy. As such gall bladder removal doesn't affect much. If you were not planning for pregnancy then for 5.5mm silent stone no need of surgery. Since you are planning for pregnancy this needs to be removed. Chances are there the stone slipps down and cause more problems.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Brief Answer:
After 1 month

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If your recovery from laparoscopic cholecystectomy is smooth and uneventful then you may start planning for pregnancy after one month.

Side effects likely to be anticipated are mild pain at stitch site or stitch infection, diarrhoea or nausea for a week. This will subside.

No need to take any medications life long. You should reduce intake of fatty and fried foods if it cauaes bloating or discomfort after eating. Many people won't develop this. If no problem after eating fatty foods then you may continue eating it normally.

Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.
