Is Head Injury A Risk Factor For Dementia?
The risk is small but present.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
It is understandable to be concerned but the risk is small.
There was a recent medical study published in the medical journal Plos One in 2017 (entitled - Head injury as a risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer's disease), that looked at this issue and it found that head injury can sometimes be associated with dementia in the future in a few persons, but the risk is low.
Interestingly as well, that study also found that the risk in women is lower and queried whether the hormones in females is protective.
If the number of persons who suffer a head injury such as yours or in a different way, on a daily basis is considered, then for these individuals to have dementia, would put the number of persons with dementia as high.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions.
Regards.
Understandable.
