Hi,

I went through your query and Can understand your concern regarding depression. Depression is a condition which manifests as low mood, easily getting tired, not wanting to don any thing, sleep and appetite disturbances, anxiety and so on. Evaluation of depression is based on the clinical history. Depending on the symptoms, the type and the severity is determined.

Hitting oneself or trying to harm self occurs quite commonly in depression. It becomes one of the mode to let out frustration within. Of course, it does more harm than good and this behavior should be tackled in an appropriate manner. Often trying to relax oneself immediately helps. Simple methods like deep breathing often helps. Of course, the underlying cause has to be sorted out.

Regarding information about your mood disorder, the best way to find out directly from your psychiatrist. You have mentioned that your doctor is not giving you additional information. I think you should ask him (I feel you have a right to know). Other way out will be that you can give information regarding your symptoms in detail and I will try to help you in the best possible way. Of course it won't be as effective as a face to face interview. I won't recommend self diagnosis based on what you find on internet as that will only lead to wrong diagnosis.

I do hope that the above information was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Sunil Gupta

My symptoms are crying a lot even at the simplest things and sometimes for no reason. I can be very happy and 20 minutes later I can be crying. I cry myself to sleep a lot and get upset when I can do my boyfriends care since he is dependent on others. I always get told to chill out and take my medicine, or what is wrong now. She thinks that I should be happy within 10 minutes of getting upset. If you need more information. I can try. Also do you consultations online or talk online or do video chat? Let me know. Thank you.

Hi,

Thanks for following up and providing more details regarding your problem.

From, what you have mentioned, you definitely seem to be in depression. That might be the reason of your getting upset frequently and crying a lot.

I would also like to know some more details about your problems:

- How long are these symptoms troubling you?
- Are these symptoms continuous or happens only when you are faced with stress?
- What about your sleeping pattern and appetite?
- Have you been on some treatment? If so, which medications have been on till now?
- Have you ever been OK for a few months ever since your symptoms started?

Depending on the symptoms, you might be suffering from depressive episode, or it may be recurrent. The most important thing to understand here is that it might also be due to your underlying personality. I would like to know about how you feel about yourself and what others have told about you.

Regarding online chatting or video chat, I am very sorry that I don't do that as of now. However, I will try to respond to your queries as soon as possible and will try my best to help you out with your issues.

Hope that you are able to overcome your symptoms rapidly,

Best wishes,
