Is Homeopathy Right Choice Of Treatment For Myoclonic Jerks?

Posted on Mon, 1 Jun 2015
Question: Hello Dr, My son has congenital hydrocephalus and treated with VP shunt on 3rd day of birth. After 3 months, he started myclonic jerks and started with allopathic medicine- Valparin, Clonozepam. He has now completed one year and ive found no improvement in allopathic medicines though myclonic occurences have stopped, but activity had dulled. I switched over to Homeopathy after advice from my relatives. He has shown good improvement but now myclonic occurences are resurfacing. Is homeo a right choice ive made?

Brief Answer:
Allopathy is preferable for myoclonic jerks.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your child's past history and present problems.

Myoclonic jerks are a type of seizures (fits) and valparin (valproate) and clonazepam are good drugs to control them. Dullness and drowsiness are side effects mostly seen with clonazepam.

In my opinion, you should start valparin alone at a dose of 15-20 mg per kg body weight per day in two divided doses. Clonazepam can be avoided.

Homeopathy has no side effects, so, you do not see dullness. At the same time, it has no efficacy, so, myoclonic jerks have returned.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Thanks Dr for your advice. However, I am concerned by the global development delay aspect. As far as the consultations ive made are concerned, myclonic jerks should be stopped to have any development in my kid. Now its almost 8 months from the time ive started treating my kid with Valparin. No major improvement has been seen still and jerks are continuing only.

Myclonic jerks stopped at 8th month when i started clonazepam two times a day along with valparin. Only normal jerks was remaining persistent from 8th month till last month when i added homeo supplement.

What best can now be done to develop him. I am afraid that i should not lose any time frame in selecting a best remedy for my kid. Is any surgery options available.

Brief Answer:
Medicines need to be adjusted.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back and providing more information.

I agree that myoclonic jerks need to be stopped to have better development of the child.

If clonazepam worked, it may be started at a much lower dose, preferably at nights.

Levetiracetam is another medicine, found to be effective for jerks.

Surgery is not really an option.

Best wishes,
