Is Infusion Pump Advisable In Liver Cancer Treatment?
Question: Hi Doctor Rommstein.
My radiologist says do not remove anymore of my liver as the cancer will come back.I hope to get to the XXXXXXX Clinic this week.Initially just looking at the cat scan the surgeon said he thought maybe surgery for the 1cm lesions and ablation for the sub centimeter lesions then the infusion pump.Does this sound reasonable. If no surgery should the infusion pump not give you the same or better results of killing the cancer in my liver and prevent more returning?
Thank you,

Brief Answer:
hi
Detailed Answer:
Yes, as I mentioned earlier. Pump may lead to tumor shrinkage and may even kills those subcentimeter lesions completely. Then, if only 2or 3 lesions are left, surgery may be more safe and less liver tissue will have to be removed. This would lead to better outcome and prognosis. Surgery at this point, would be dangerous and at the same time, it will not be effective in removing all lesions, especially those small ones. Even if ablation is used after surgery, there would be micrometastases which can be killed only by chemo.
So my recommendation is to have chemo or pump at this point and then reevaluate liver and see if surgery can be done later when tumor size and number of lesions decrease.
