Is It Normal To Experience Bleeding After Taking Plan B?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jul 2015
Question: had sex 2 times, one unprotected, she took plan b right after. 2 days later I used a condom and then next day, she starts bleeding while sleeping and says "I'm having a miscarriage it isn't my period, too early ".. what do I do? Is it really a miscarriage?what are my options ? She said she is cramping/really tired and bleeding still but not as much. Was it really a miscarriage? Can it happen that quick?

Brief Answer:
Not due to miscarriage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The bleeding that she had 2-3 days after taking Plan B is the withdrawal bleeding caused by the high dose hormonal pill -Plan B. It is not due to miscarriage. A miscarriage is associated with a delayed period and not an early period.
To be very sure she can get her serum beta HCG levels evaluated. These levels do take 4-5 days to come down after a miscarriage.
The withdrawal bleeding will stop on its own in next 2-3 days.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

so the plan b can occur like this then ? She took it friday, and now it's Thursday so it's about 5 days. She said she's light cramping and light bleeding, she isn't bleeding as much before. She feels nauseous (probally from the blood). What should i tell her? Will she be okay? What are the options here? I hope she will be okay. You said 2-3 days but she told me it was 5 days to be exact, sorry I should of been more accurate.

And she told me that her period starts in 10 days, if that information helps, could it be just the plan b side effect after these days? (She isn't used to this stuff), she usually gets her period late, I just want her to be okay and not worried about a possible miscarriage or a pregnancy in the making . It could be just the side effects of the plan b right? Should any hospital be necessary to examine her? She feels better currently, with light cramps and light bleeding, not as bad before with nausea .

Brief Answer:
Yes. It can happen due to Plan B.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The light bleeding 5 days after plan B is due to withdrawal bleeding. It is usually a mild bleeding. You can tell her that she will be alright and the bleeding will stop in next 2-3 days. Her normal periods may be delayed by a week or so.
Plan B is associated with irregularity in periods. These are normal side effects of Plan B. No need to attend a hospital. It is not due to pregnancy. Wait for the bleeding to stop on its own.
Hope my answer is helpful.
