Is It Normal To Experience Swelling Of Jaws After Taking Antibiotics?

default
Posted on Wed, 27 May 2015
Question: I'm in Brazil and yesterday I had tooth pain for 7 hours. I went to the emergency room and was given amoxicillin clavulanate as a 10 day course. Right now my jaw is swollen but not numb after starting the antibiotic. The tooth pain but the swelling is surprising. I go back to the US in three days and would prefer to see my dentist there before considering incision and drainage, or removal of the tooth. Do think it is ok and should I give the antibiotic more time/

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX First of all thanks for approaching Healthcare magic for your query.

I read through your query and I must say that nothing to be worried in this case. It's correct that they have given amoxcillin clavulinate. Usually antibiotics take 2-3 days to start showing their effect. So the swelling arising can be usual case. But if it increases rapidly and if causing any problem regarding swallowing or something I suggest you to get incision and drainage done at Brazil itself and take more powerful antibiotics and higher dosage. Otherwise if within next day swelling is controlled then nothing to be worried antibiotics is working and you can get the treatment done at US.

Besides these do warm salt water gargle twice or thrice daily.Drink lots and lots of water.Avoid sweet and cold food touching that area of teeth.Take medicines on correct time and correct dosage.Be cool and stay happy.Happy mind is best medicine for any disease.Be confident on your doctor and drugs you take.Hope you are benefitted something from this reply. If you have more queries please be free to approach us as we are waiting to help you solve your problem.Have a healthy day!!!!
