Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: I am 76 years old male an in need of cataract surgery but I have a fainting problem when my eyes are dilated.
The last episode a few years ago I fainted in the exam chair and later fell to the floor and vomited, was taken to emergency room where all vitals were checked and after no problems found, sent home an hour later. I there a way to accomplish the pre exam and surgery without problems?

Brief Answer:
vasovagal attack

Detailed Answer:
My Dear,
Thanks for sending your query to us.

This is not too uncommon a problem which we encounter. What is happening is that due to vagal stimulation at times one gets a fainting attack.
This usually does not occur in lying down position and is supposed to recover on its own.

For us general anesthesia is the last resort for the management of such cases.
Our patients who have this tendency receive a shot of atropine to block this passage of such stimulation. We handel such cases with the help of an anaesthetist who is well-trained to handle such situations.

For you my suggestion would be to explain this to your eye doctor so that he is fully prepared to handle. Usually a shot of atropine is all that is needed.

Please do get back to me in case of any further query in this regard.
