Question: XXXXX
Hi, I'm just wondering how Important is it for a 51 yr old post menopausal woman to keep having pap smears every two years. My last pap smear was so painful and i am sure has left me with a small scar from a cut. I am way too scared to go again.

Brief Answer:
Paps smear recommendation

Detailed Answer:
The current scientific recommendation is to do a smear every 3 years if the previous smear is normal. If you it was painful you may try this method this time. If you have a sexual partner it's good to do regular activity before the smear for easy insertion of a speculum. If do not have a partner finger dilatation may help and you may use k y jelly for lubrication during finger insertion.

Similarly you can ask your doctor for lubrication before the smear was taken, these ways can prevent pain. The bleeding or cut should not happen again.

Hope this eases your anxiety.
