Is It Right To Get Rid Of Some Of The Prostate When A Kidney Stone Is Blocking The Urinary Tract Leading To Prostate Enlargement?

Question: My husband has had kidney stones in the past. About a month ago, a kidney stone blocked his urinary tract and the bladder could not empty. After a CAT scan, etc. the ER nurse put in a catheter that he has worn for a month. Supposedly, kidney stones are moving and his prostate is enlarged. We do not have insurance and can not afford to have a procedure to clean the tract out and they say it can get rid of some of the prostrate that is obstructing the flow. Does this sound right to you? Also, is it possible for him to continue wearing a catheter full time? The nurse took the old catheter out yesterday but he could not piss so they put another one in. But one doctor is saying he can not wear a catheter for the rest of his life. He is 72 yrs. old. They said before that a lot of men continue wearing one throughout their life. Also, is there an type of medication that a man can take that will reduce the prostrate without surgery?

Brief Answer:
Tamsulosin is a good medication.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I think there are two different problems that your husband is suffering from. One is the kidney stones and the other is a prostate obstruction problem.

The urinary catheter will bypass the prostate so the urine would be able to pass. Some patients would be wearing the catheter all their life if they are non responsive to medications and unable to undergo surgery. However long term catheter has it's complications like frequent infection, damage to the penis, strictures etc.

For my patients I give tamsulosin 400 mcg once a day at bedtime. this would relax the prostate and would help patients urinate without a catheter.

I hope I have answered your questions adequately.
