Question: Is it safe for a 2year old to go in a national park cave tour? The cave is dry in Arizona.I worry about any infection in the air produced by guano. Thank.

Brief Answer:
Not recommended to take your infant there.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, welcome to Ask a doctor service.
I read your query and here is my advice.

The guano bats or birds can transmit histoplasmosis.

In the United States, histoplasmosis commonly occurs in the Mississippi and Ohio river valleys, though it can occur in other areas, too. Take enough information that the place you are visiting has histoplasmosis contamination.

If you are sure that the place you are visiting is inhabited by guano bats and has histoplasmosis contamination, you better don't take your infant there.
An immature immune system or weak immune system can make infection easy.
Don't take that risk because histoplasmosis can even be fatal in some cases.

Hope I have answered the question.

The park staff claims that the cave is safe and free from contamination and that children often visit. Would this make a difference? Or is it still risky? Thanks

Brief Answer:
Always take the right information before going.

Detailed Answer:
This can make a difference because the staff knows better if the area is prone to histoplasmosis or not.

If they reassure you and if you find good pieces of evidence you can take him with you.

Regards
