Is It Safe To Attend A Camp While Dealing With Dehydration?
Question: I became dehydrated Monday evening after working in the hot afternoon. I suddenly became extremely dizzy, to the extent that I had to hold onto things to keep from falling down. This was accompanied by profuse sweating, nausea and vomiting. After managing to get to my phone and googling symptoms, I managed to figure out that it was dehydration and probably heat exhaustion. Upon stumbling to a water cooler that was on the premises, falling once, the symptoms slowly started to subside and after about 2 hours I was able to walk OK and felt almost normal. I still had a mild headache and residual spacey feeling. I also noticed that I felt weaker over the next 2 days but I am feeling stronger now. My question is my wife and I are planning to camp in the smokies this weekend and I am wondering if it is safe to do so. I don't want to be in an isolated area like that if there is a good possibility of a relapse. For your information, I am 61, overweight but in relatively good shape considering. Blood pressure, sugar readings, cholesterol and heart rate etc have always been very good.
Brief Answer:
should be fine
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
It sounds like you have recovered from this episode. There is little chance of relapse as long as you drink plenty of fluids and avoid becoming over heated again. If you are hiking take plenty of snacks and water with your. You may want to take it a bit easy as your body continues to recover from this trauma but relapse is not likely if you stay cool, hydrated and get plenty of rest.
Have a great vacation.
