Is It Safe To Consume Alcohol While Having Levofloxacin For Bronchitis?
Question: Hi, I'm writing this to you because tonight is my birthday party. I am currently sick with bronchitis, sinusitis, and esophagitis. I am on nexium 40mg for my esophagitis, and on levofloxacin 500 mg. Will I be able to consume any alcoholic beverage this evening in celebration? I know not to go overboard, but I was wondering if I could have up to 3 or 4 drinks.
Thank you so much for your time,

Brief Answer:
Please, stay away from alcohol!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.
I wish you a very happy birthday and many more to come.
Sadly,, I will strongly discourage you from consuming alcohol tonight. Alcohol increases the degradation of drugs in the system. This would cause the levofloxacin to be converted into inactive form rapidly leading to ineffective concentrations that can result in treatment failure. I will suggest that you keep the alcohol drinking for some other time and not today. Keep e for some time after your treatment sis complete.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

I know you as a doctor needs to tell me to stay away from alcohol completely, however if I were to drink what would be the safe amount to consume? I will at least have 2-3 drinks for my birthday, because it is my birthday. However, will exceeding 2-3 more drinks cause anything fatal to happen to me?
Brief Answer:
If you ust drink, then stop at 2!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for stating your wishes.
I understand it is your birthday and you may do what you would not do on other days. Should you insist on taking alcohol, the keeping it at 2bottles would be the best decision at this time.
Besides, have you been drinking alcohol before and what is your maximum capacity on outings?
I hope to hear from you and wish you well.

I drink a lot when I'm not sick. I would probably say anywhere from 6-8 drinks a night. I used to drink a bottle by myself on like a Saturday, so my body is definitely used to the alcohol intake. That's why I was wondering if I could drink 3 or 4 drinks now, because in actuality that's not even a lot for me at all. If I consumed 4-5 alcoholic beverages, could that include fatality when I'm on antibiotics?

Brief Answer:
It would not lead to fatality in the immediate!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for following up with me.
%bottles of beer would not lead to any fatality at the moment. Remember long term use of alcohol in excess damages the liver and can led to liver cirrhosis, liver failure, hear diseases, cancers, etc. I will recommend that you consider cutting back on the amount of alcohol you consume to minimal levels like a bottle every 2days.
I wish you well. Happy birthday to you!
