Is It Safe To Consume Protein Supplements?
I have started going to gym since 2 days. I spend 2 hrs. These two hours includes 10 mins warm up, 15 different types of exercises(weight training) and 10 different types of stretching exercises. My goal is to shed weight and develop a lean and toned muscular body. My Gym instructor informed that the diet plan is very important as I am doing quite a lot of time in gym. He suggested to take 1 scoop of whey protein powder before workout and 1 scoop after the workout. Ideally, he would have suggested chicken and eggs but I am vegetarian, those non veg options are ruled out. The protein intake is very crucial for me at this time and I have few questions about protein powder
1) What do you mean by "whey protein" and how is it prepared ?
2) The product that I bought is present at the link http://www.healthkart.com/sv/on-%28optimum-nutrition%29-gold-standard-100-whey-protein/SP-9558?gclid=CIyGoZzho8MCFUQHvAodU7wA7Q&navKey=VRNT-14666
My questions is, is it safe to consume these kind of protein supplements?
It is milk protein, relatively safe option
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome to HCM. I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The answers to your questions:
1. Whey protein
Whey protein is protein isolated from liquid portion of milk left over after production of cheese. It mainly contains milk proteins (lactalbumins), branched chain aminoacids and immunoglobulins. This helps in muscle build up and weight reduction.
2. Gone through the product you purchased online. This protein supplementation is relatively safe in amount suggested to you. If you have some pre existing kidney disease, you should restrict the amount taken per day. Only concern is kidney damage in those at risk - obviously due to high consumption of protein.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
