Is It Safe To Consume Water Stored In Copper Vessels By Women And Children?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Jun 2015
Question: I am 33 yrs old and recently I have been reading many articles related to copper vessels. They claim that storing water in copper vessels and consuming them is good for health. It also states that this is followed by Ayurveda of old time. I would like to know if this is true. If so is there any restriction of levels. Also does it have any side effects? Is it safe for women and children? Also please let me know on using plastic bottles(eg. tupperware) for storing water. Please advice.

Brief Answer:
Advice on "safe water drinking".

Detailed Answer:

Dear,
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda, with your health concern.

1. In Ayurveda it was recommended to store water in copper vessel since it was believed to balance all the three "Doshas" in body which now is scientifically proven that storing water in copper vessel kills bacteria causing diarrhea.

PS.
i. Since safe water is still a problem in developing countries ( including India) thus is a good option in rural areas/urban slums.

ii. Reason for throwing copper coins in river, lakes, ponds, wells.

iii. Buy/bring commonest form of copper: copper water jugs or copper glass ( XXXXXXX can be a good substitute)

2. Since copper is important for newborns, expectant mothers and you should always consult your health care provider regarding the recommended dosage. (Which I have advised you all about below)

PS.

i. Since healthy adults consume a well balanced diet, in which copper is also present thus supplementation is generally not recommended/necessary but only during periods of certain illness, genetic disease.

ii. XXXXXXX dose of copper is 10 mg/day: in tablet form.

iii. For permissible level in water: check/ confirm with drinking water guidelines set by WHO ( 2 mg/L)

3. To be certain of good bottle check with the recycling symbol on the bottle:

i. If #2,#4,#5: it is fine
ii. If #1: it is usually recommended for one time use

PS. It does matter which bottle you use but the type of plastic matters.
