Is It Safe To Fly When Having HSP And Having Rashes?
Question: My grand daughter has HSP, she is Korean, 4 years old and lives in the Philippines. She is covered in livid red rash, has problems walking etc. my daughter in law wants to fly her back to Korea to a Western Hospital which apparently specialises in HSP, should she be flying - it is a six hour flight
Brief Answer:
Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP) & flight evacuation
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP)usually resolves spontaneously without therapy. Only 1–5% of children progress to end-stage renal disease. Unless she has complications due to rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis and stable otherwise ,there is no restriction to flying at least for a few hours journey.

Actually I should add my daughter in law and son are at their wits end. My granddaughter first showed symptoms on New Years Eve - well done for the doctors in emergency knowing exactly what it was. The next day she could not walk and the rash was a wee bit better. The doctors said there was no need for her to be in hospital. She came home and as it was her birthday, I guess she did a lot of running about and getting excited. Today her rash is much worse and she cannot walk, as before only a bit worse. Apparently the doctors in Cebu are concerned with her rising white blood cell count? would you agree?
I forgot to say, should she resting in bed?

Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP)
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Henoch-Schonlein purpura (HSP):
Laboratory studies generally show a mild rise in wbc count, a normal platelet count, and occasionally eosinophilia.
The child should rest in bed for a week or longer, especially if there is evidence of renal involvement(proteinuria, cast, microscopic hematuria).
