Question: My osteopath has suggested Buscopan as I have been having spasms In back waist area which move about to between ribs at back. I also hav a history of IBS . Sometimes the pain/ spasms seems to shoot fro tummy area to back and vice versa. At moment I only have back spasms tummy ok but should I still take bus copan?
Brief Answer:
better to take skeletal muscle relaxant
Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,
Welcome to HealthcareMagic .
Buscopan is a smooth muscle relaxant which is helpful in relieving pain of stomach(tummy) .
For back spasms skeletal muscle relaxant like tizanidine with aceclofenac is used . This is prescription drug. Buscopan doesn't help much in back spasms. I suggest you to take buscopan only when tummy spasms are there.
Hope I have answered your query . If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Thank you very much. Are the drugs you mentioned similar to diazepam? Also is there any way of knowing why I am Getting the spasms if back X-Ray was normal.
I really appreciate your kind advice. Suddenly as I am typing I also have a tummy spasm so could I take the two together if I get a prescription. I have some diazepam here but can I take it with Buscopan?

Brief Answer:
both drugs are different
Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,
Diazepam and tizanidine are different class of drug. But diazepam also have the action to reduce spasms. So you may take that for back muscle spasm. I usually prefer tizanidine for my patients as it is more potent and comes in combination with pain killer.
Causes of muscle spasms are many. In your case it could be due to irritable bowel causing nerve irritation and spasms in back also . Other conditions are over use or stretching, arthritis of spine, diabetes, anemia, nervous disease of spine etc.
Except in arthritis of spine in other conditions x ray will be normal. To diagnose the nerve condition - nerve conduction study , electromyography and CPK levels done.
If you are getting tummy spasms then I suggest you to take only buscopan as once bowel spasm reduce chances are there back spasm also reduce . If doesn't reduce after 1 hour then you may take diazepam/tizanidine. Both buscopan and diazepam/tizanidine may be taken safely together.
Whenever only back spasm is there that time diazepam /tizanidine is preferred.
