Is It Safe To Have MRI Twice In A Month?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Oct 2014
Question: I have had two MRIs' with contrast in 2013 for headaches at the Mayo.
I have switched to another neurologist who wants me to take another MRI with contrast. I am worried that this is radioactive stuff and is unhealthy in the longrun. the headaches are at about a 3 level with 10 being the worst. I've only seen him once but he is regarded highly and is very busy. He hadn't even seen my Mayo records.
Do you think another MRI is necessary?

Brief Answer:
No radioactivity involved but enough scans already

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms. XXXXXX. My name is Dr. Dariush Saghafi and I am a neurologist from XXXXXXX OH, USA.

I understand you've had 2 MRI's of the brain with contrast in 2013 by the Mayo for complaints of headaches. I'm assuming that neither scan showed anything significant. Can you tell me WHY they went to a 2nd MRI with contrast? Did they use DOUBLE CONTRAST by chance? Or were they looking at specific areas of the brain with high resolution cuts?

And now someone else wants another MRI with contrast? Lemme guess...this neurologist just happens to have a unit in his office? If you say, YES, then, you can just call me CARNAK THE INCREDIBLE! LOL!

I'd press him for a GOOD response to the question of why he really needs another study. Tell him not to be so spoiled and make do with what he's got...a doctor is supposedly one who is trained in the Art of how to use his/her brain and 5 senses to turn the unknown and unseen into a diagnosis and best cure possible...seriously

You get the idea....NO 3rd MRI....if this guy can't deal with him....toss him to the curb and cast that line back into the sea....something's bound to bite again! LOL.

Quite honestly, I think it's an unnecessary expenditure of money by SOMEONE and although radioactivity is not the concern the contrast substance can be toxic to the kidneys and every exposure you have risks precipitation of either an allergic reaction or simple damage of your nephrons (bet you didn't even know you had such things...well, you do..and they're really spectacular...why would anybody want to destroy 1 let alone a few million? IN EACH KIDNEY??

I wouldn't do the 3rd one and instead tell the neurologist that you are happy to obtain either the radiology reports (which I will guess were negative for any abnormalities) or even get him discs he can look at in his system from 2013.

If there are no neurological changes in your exam then, getting another MRI makes no sense. Have you asked him why he thinks he needs another one for the symptoms you're having and especially in light of what sounds to be a normal neurological exam?

If I've been of some use to answering your questions can I ask you for a little written feedback and then, a STAR RATING? That would be OUTSTANDING if you'd do that for me.
