default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: I was advised by an anaesthetist to incude propranolol in future anaesthetics as the usual drugs cause me to be depressed and emotionally unstabe for days after an anaesthetic. But I have Parkinsons disease, possible asthma, bronchiectasis, obesity all of which would aprear to contraindicate the use of propranolol. wHAT DO yOU think??

Brief Answer:
better to avoid propanolol

Detailed Answer:
hi

thanks for using HCM

i can understand your problem, & feel concerned about you.

As such you do not have to go for anaesthetic procedures too often until & unless it is really indicated.

although non-specific beta-blockers like propanolol are more commonly used for treating stressful & anxiety (personal as well as social) related conditions due to the better action with good outcome.

but these drugs are contraindicated in conditions like broncho-spastic disorders, asthma, allergies, diabetics, unexplained cardiac/or non cardiac related bradycardias.

but it is a good drug to relieve severe tremors of parkinson disorder.
when your other conditions contradict the use of propanolol, it is better to avoid in order to prevent the complications.

i would suggest you to go for other simple anti-anxiety or antidepressants drugs like alprazolam , clonazepam or lorazepam after discussing about your depressive episodes with a good psychiatrist & your regular anaesthetist.

hoping that this will help you with sufficient guidance.

wishing you good health

all the best
take care.
