Is It Safe To Have X-rays During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: Hi I had 2 xrays one on 15th august and then on 17th august 11 am. Firsy was at my dentist and second was cbct for teeth at x ray center. I had iui done on 17th at 2 pm. Post that again dentist took a tooth x ray today.Just realised x XXXXXXX are contraindicated for pregnancy. No shield was used for any of the 3 x rays. ( 2 x rays) prior to iui and 1 post iui. Is there a chance that if I conceive baby will be defect ? Should I abort if I conceive?

Brief Answer:
Xray exposure during Iui..explained

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
X-rays are contraindicated during early pregnancy yes but any x ray prior to ii or fertilisation would not affect the embryo at all.
Secondly the the third X-ray tooth which was taken today was localized to the tooth and had no exposure to the pelvis even when the screen was not used. This is because tooth X-rays are focussed X-rays and the rays are concentrated over the face at maximum and extent to lower extremity is not seen.
Thirdly , an X-ray exposure of more than 4 rads in early pregnancy is known to cause a defect if there has been a direct exposure. One X-ray exposure exposes to 1.5 rads and hence considering that it was only 2 days post IUI , even fertilisation may not have completed by today ( if there occurred one), so chances of baby getting defect is minimal.
Rest assured. But hence forth avoid any further X-ray exposures and insist on shielding with lead shield.
Regards

Tretment history.
Got period on 1st aug. Started recagon 50 iu injections daily 8 pm from 3rd aug to 14th aug. On 14th aug morning had a 19 mm folicle. Doc gve cetrotide at 3 pm and last dose of recagon at 8 pm. On 15th again took cetrotide at 3 pm and then ovitrelle 1 amp injection at 10 30 pm.
Note : we chose recagon as 1st linr of treatment as we wanted single follicle only. On 14th other follivled were 13 mm so 19 mm was a dominant follicle.

On 15tg afternoon went to dentist ans she took 2 tooth x rays. She asked me to takr cbct x ray of teeth which I took on 17th morning at 10 45 am. Then went for iui at 11 am. Husband came late and gavr sample at 12 15. Post wash 40 mill with 90 percent motility. iui was done at 2 30 pm. She did sono post iui immediately. The egg had already ruptured then. ( will thr be succrss if egg has already ovulated) if yes I guess it wudbe fertilized by now. When do u think it may hsve ruptured? My dov saif with ovitrelle its usual aftrr 36 hours. Is it poss that egg may have ruptured earlier as it was already 19 mm on friday 14th aug. What arr chances tgt sperm got egg. Was sperm count enuf if we did iui at tgt time to mange fertilize egg

And I had 3 x rays of tooth today. ( 2 of left tooth and 1 of right tooth) She used sheild only for 1 as while chatting I told her of my iui. She used twice for the left tooth as first wasnt clear. I fear fertilization may havr occured. If yrs will x ray harm.baby. also did we miss right timing for iui. Will sperm manage to reach egg in timr?
Also if tgere is defect in baby how soon will I know. I am ok witg not going ahead but dont want to risk defects.

Hello,
Let me make some facts clear here:-
1. the success rate of IUI procedure inspite of all protocols still remains between 30 -40 percent, so believing that this may be successful completely and definitely, i am sure no doctor can give that assurance.
2. The sperm IUI has been rightly done on 17th , after 36hrs post Ovitrelle or hcg trigger . The ovum would have ruptured and has to travel all the way into the tubes to the ampulla region of the tube and so does the sperms which can say alive in female genital tract for as long as 3 days.
So exact timing of fertilisation can be in these 3 days and exact time cannot be predicted.
3. Your concern about the defects, well as i said exposure seems unlikely as tooth x ray was taken and pelvic exposure was nor targeted. bUT NEVERTHELESS SOME RADIATION CANNOT BE Overlooked that may have caused pelvic exposure. However at present there is no way to find out the defect as of now.
The thing is if the embryo would have been affected then there would not be an implantation naturally and you may have your menses again leading to a failed procedure.
but if the process is successful and you still suspect defect , then there are scans and blood tests at different levels which can detect any abnormality in the foetus beforehand and you can stay prewired and if any defect is evident then pregnancy can be terminated well in advance.
Legally pregnancy can be terminated till 20 weeks pregnancy if there are congenital defects or baby is abnormal or incompatible with life after birth.
So presently ensure that there are no more exposures and you should be continuing your folic acid and progesterone tabs as advised,

Does Ovitrelle ensure ovulation after 36 hours and not before?

I was having CBCT scan done at 36 hours and 15 min post ovitrelle. so would it be to early for egg to be fertilized?

CBCT is a CT scan of the maxillofacial part. But no sheild was used. I understand a egg is vaiable only for 12 to 24 hours. So i would have to get pregnant on day of ovulation only- right?

How long does it take for ovum to come to fallopian tube after ovulation?
How long does fertilization process take?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1. Ovitrelle is an hcg trigger and yes it initiates ovulation within 36 hrs from the time of injection and surety can be ascertained only by daily follicular monitoring by ultrasound.
2. No, ovum stays till 48 hrs and waits for sperms in ampulla region of tube. So its next 2-3 days when pregnancy can occur. And hence IUI done soon after ovulation to allow 24 for sperms to reach the tube as well.
3. ovum reaches ampulla by 12-18 hrs.
4. if sperms are already present in the ampulla then fertilisation occurs soon as the ovum reaches .

On fri and sat I had cetrotide injection at 3 pm and on sat had ovidrel at 10 30 pm. Iui was done on monday. Is there a chance that fertilization occured before cbct scan was done? Or would the fertization have happened after cbct?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Firstly there is no purity of fertilisation as i said earlier that the chances of success of ii are 35-40%. So if fertilisation were to happen then it shall happen after monday once ii has been done.
I would suggest you to do a serum beta hcg test after 7 days of ii to check if pregnancy has established first , because worrying about reasons and causes which are not under our control is futile. I understand your anxiety here but try to be positive and stress free as stress per se is one of the main cause of infertility in itself.
