Is It Safe To Take Emergency Contraceptives When Breastfeeding?
Question: Hi,
Is it safe to take emergency contraceptives like unwanted 72 by a breast feeding mom or else what medicine have to be taken with the contraceptive so that it does not have any affect on breast feeding child. Please suggest suitable emergency contraceptive pill also because our protection failed last time ( 12 hours ago). What precaution has to be taken if sometime protection fails or protection is not used is immediate pregnancy is not wanted. Is it compulsory to use protection every time or there is any time period when protection is not required.

Unwanted 72 is safest right now.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
All the contraceptive pills that are taken after sex will show an effect in the breast feeding. For this time, the best and safest option is emergency pill like unwanted 72. But in future it is best to use an intrauterine contraceptive device like Freedom -5. It is safe for use during breast feeding.

If the contraceptives affect breast feeding, in what manner it affects .whether the breast milk is contaminated or the quantity of milk will be decreased. If today contraceptive pill is taken , for how may days breast feeding is to be stopped to nullify the affect of drugs in baby
Brief Answer:
Can decrease milk production. No contamination.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Contraceptives can decrease the amount of breast feeding and if taken for prolonged periods the effect of feminine hormones can affect a male baby.
If the emergency pill is taken just once and you have a female baby then there is no need to stop feeding. In case of male baby you can stop the feed for 48 hours in case the baby is older than 6 months. Otherwise continue the feed and avoid taking pills next time.
It is best to use a regular contraceptive like Multiload or Freedom- 5 after consulting her gynecologist.
Hope my answer is helpful.

My baby is 2 years male baby, so 48 hours stop of breast feed is enough .
Brief Answer:
Further breast feeding not needed.
Detailed Answer:
For a 2 year old baby it is better to stop the breast feeding and put the baby on solid food. Breast feeding need not be continued after 2 years. Do take calcium supplements along with to avoid bone thinning.

No gap is needed.
Detailed Answer:
After taking the pill any gap is not required but you need to take adequate precaution so that you do not need the emergency contraceptive next time. Taking it frequently can cause irregular bleeding patterns.
