Is It Safe To Take Steroids For Injection Into The Gums?
![default](/r/images/default.png)
Question: Doctor, just one quick question before I make a wrong decision. Oral surgeon (who is not versed in facial pain) has ordered the steroids for injection into the gums but I did just find out that the Kenalog has alcohol in it. As u well know, TN2 is burning sensation and don't want to exacerbate. Do u feel this is a good option to try where maybe the alcohol content is not a factor in causing any burning type sensation?
Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for your direct questions.
I have read your new question.
Kenalog contains benzyl alcohol as an excipient a type of alcohol used as a solvent in medicine.
This alcohol type does not cause any burning sensation when injected in small quantities, so, I think, it won't exacerbate the burning sensation.
Hope this helps.
Feel free to ask if you have further questions.
I would explain as follows.

Just one super quick follow up. Neurologist here tells me the TN2 will be helped much more by steroids vs the AO since trigeminal nerve is involved. If so, what is the origin of the AO - mostly a nerve in the brain that is mis-firing?
Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.
Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
I have read your follow-up question.
One of the causes triggering the AO symptoms is thought to be the irritation of the small terminal branches of the trigeminal nerve.
Inflammation is an expected possible irritant, so, that's why it is thought that steroids may help with the symptoms.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
