Is Itchy Skin Due To Ketosis In The Skin And Can Anything Be Done To Relieve The Itch?
Question: I have been a type 1 Diabetic for over 60 years and mere pressure on my skin makes it itch. Is this due to ketosis in the skin and can anything be done to relieve the itch? what chemistry could be applied to make ketones harmless?
Brief Answer:
About itching in type 1 diabetes
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
First, I would congratulate you for the long-standing diabetes! You should have kept it well controlled.
Secondly, why do you think that itching is due to ketosis? Did you check ketones in urine? Are they positive?
If so, you should keep the blood sugar well controlled, do the insulin injections and take the meals regularly in order to wash out ketones.
At your age a high bilirubin or urea should be excluded as a cause of itching and treatment with antihistamine tried.
The only way to avoid the side effects of ketones, is to make them negative.
Hope the information will help.
Best wishes,
Dr. Mirjeta
