Is Loss Of Balance A Sign Of Nerve Damage?

default
Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: I was wondering if my rapid progression of losing my balance every time I try walking could be nerve damage in my spine or is it neurological? Two weeks ago I was just having muscle fatigue and within the two weeks I have resorted to using a walker to prevent any potential falls. I also have this headache that is going on its 3rd day.

Brief Answer:
Neurological examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

Rapidly progressing disabling neurological deficits resorting one to use a walker for walking is a severe progression of the disease.Balance issues need to be thoroughly evaluated,in this case.
Its not possible to make a diagnosis just historically,in your case.I suggest you to please visit a neurologist in person and undergo a neurological physical examination.

If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Ok Thank you. I do have a follow up question. My mom has MS, and for about 10 years I have seen Several Neurologists because of that fact and 5 years ago I had a Neuropathy attack I guess that cause paralysis for a month. They said they saw a couple of lesions but it wasn't significant enough to be classified as a MS attack. However, a year later when I had to undergo another MRI they were gone. Is it possible for lesions to appear several years later and with more severity? I know MS runs in family's so if my symptoms require a Neuro exam, I'm wondering if this is the start of MS. I don't want a diagnosis, just some disease marker information.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
MS lesions on MRI can recur.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being in follow-up.

Yes,MS lesions have tendency to recur on MRI.Severity may vary in different episodes.
These symptoms can be related to MS.It needs a neurological examination and a repeat MRI now to see if there are any new lesions.
Other disease markers for MS-
Visual evoked potential-latencies may be prolonged
CSF(Cerebrospinal fluid) - oligoclonal bands may be detected.

Hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to answer else please close the thread, rate it and write a review as your rating will be of help to me.
