Posted on Tue, 19 Aug 2014
Question: Hi my son is 6 months old and he weighs 6.7kg he only put on 200g since last month but he has 5 formula bottles a day at 180ml but doesn't always finish them. He is happy and alert and reaching his age appropriate milestones, he was born 3.8kg. Is his weight a problem or is he doing ok?
Thanks XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
This is normal- don't worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi...thanks for consulting on health care magic. I am extremely happy that you have given me all the details which i require to have asked you. You say his development is normal and he's taking his feed normally and is as active as any other baby of his age group. This is more than enough to decide that he is a normally growing kid. Weight alone doesn't mean anything if the kid is growing normally and achieving the developmental milestones appropriately. To be XXXXXXX with you rather than weight, the achievement of developmental milestones and the daily activity of the kid is more important.
Please do not worry your kid is doing fine.
Another issue is, weight gain is a dynamic phenomena. So i suggest you to get back to us after a few weeks again so that we can decide on his weight gain.
Till then you can be rest assured.
Another suggestion is that you should continue to breastfeed him even though he is being fed by formula feeding. Mother's milk has got many other advantages apart from weight gain alone including immunity and also brain development.
