Is Masturbation 5 Days After Robotic Ventral Mesh Rectopexy Surgery Safe?

Question: I am 25 years old male and I underwent Robotic Ventral Mesh Rectopexy. Is masturbation 5 days after surgery safe? Would masturbation cause any issues with the mesh?
Could it cause mesh migration?
I did it on the 5th day after surgery. My surgeon gave no instructions about, I am feeling very tight in pelvic floor and have random pelvic contractions/spams. This has also caused some more bloating and discomfort. I am not sure what it is but did this cause any issue to the mesh placed inside ? Would masturbation cause any issues to mesh? Do I need to worry about this ?

Hello and thank you for query,
Masturbation or any sexual act require moment of a number of muscles in pelvic area.
But I don't think it would cause whole mesh to migrate but yes the feeling you are having is due to spasm in muscles.
I would suggest you to take anti spasmodic Baclofen 10 mg twice daily for few days to calm down muscles.
Avoid such activities for minimum 2 weeks post surgery and give time for mesh to settle down in body.
Follow ups are welcome.
Thanks!

Thanks for answering
So what I am facing is not due to any mesh related problems?
How would I know if the mesh has been migrated?
Should I be concerned about these pelvic spasms and see the surgeon?
Would this have failed the surgery? Do I need to worry about that?
I want to make sure nothing moved the mesh because I don’t want Rectal prolapse again.
When you say “settle down the body” do you mean the mesh could move internally if I did anything vigorous?
Can you please help me answer these questions?

Hi dear,
Settle down mean give your body time to heal the area around which the mesh is fixed or inserted.
For eg if you bike skids and your skin gets eroded you keep it in dressing for a week or so to allow it to heal.
In the same way mesh is a foreign body which is fixed into your body by surgeon but give this foreign body some time to be a part of your body. The tissues surrounding the mesh would start forming a layer around it slowly slowly(2 weeks) so that it gets fixated in your body.
Hope you can understand what I am trying to say...Doctor have fixated the mesh artificially now body tissue(muscles surrounding it would form a layer around it so that it become fixed permanently and therefore 2-3 weeks time is usually given and patient is asked not to perform strainous exercise during this period...Patient is given a laxative so that to pass stool patient does not strain...All tis is done to give 2-3 weeks time for mesh to get covered by body tissues.
Don't worry mesh is at its place,It would cause severe pain if it gets displaced and your rectum would have already prolapsed.
Just take any over the counter anti inflammatory like ibuprofen for 3 days.
Take vitamin C and B compex to promote fast healing.
And yes take proper rest for minimum 2 weeks.
Thanks!

Thank you for reassuring. Please answer my final question as I have been very anxious about this.
It has been 3 weeks since I got the surgery and I still do not feel much improvement. I was better for the first 5 days before I masturbated. After this act I’ve been having more spams and occasional constipation for some reason. I didn’t have this for first 5 days of the surgery. It all started after I masturbated once.
So you think that one episode of masturbating would not have created any issues with the mesh inside, right?

Hi again ,
As 3 weeks have already passed I would suggest you yo visit the surgeon because actually in online consult I can't examine you plus I am surprised that laxative has not been prescribed by doctor and even after mesh surgery you were in constipation.
I mean you should ask your doctor that why laxative was not given.
I think you need in person examination.
Visit your surgeon and revert back with answers to me.
Hope you can understand that online and in person are two very different things...although I could write that don't worry nothing would be wrong etc but I never misguide my patient ,So visit your surgeon once and then follow up with me.
Hope everything turns out to be fine.
Regards!

Hi Dr. XXXXXXX
Thank you I appreciate your response!
Please read below
I saw my surgeon today and told him about the ejaculating incident (that I attempted to do it 5 days post surgey) he said that it should affect the mesh as the mesh is situated more deeper inside then rectum and around those muscles that’s re active during ejaculation. However the spasms and discomfort I experienced was likely due to ejaculation. I forgot to ask him whether I should get an ultra sound or not what are your thoughts?
About the constipation - he said I should try not to strain a lot if it doesn’t come out. I should consider taking more miralax. I was taking miralax packets for 2 weeks post op and stopped last week. He said I can adjust to miralax based on how my body responds to it. I will start it again from today.
I asked him about the mesh twice he said it shouldn’t be an issue. What are your thoughts? I got Robotic Ventral Mesh Rectopexy and yes I think the mesh is far from those muscles that get tended up during ejaculation so am hoping nothing happened to mesh. What do you say?
Thank you!

I meant it should not affect the mesh in the above statement. That’s what my doc said
But what are your thoughts? He said mesh is situated far than those muscles which are acting used during ejaculation.
Should an ultra sound be considered ?

Hi. Dear,
That's what I was explaining that mesh is there only it's the spasm which is causing pain however that could be checked by your doctor for atleast your satisfaction by a USG or CT.I mean this would have made your mind calm down.
2)Yes keep taking miralax as straining and constipation may cause problem.
3)However if after your examination Doctor is satisfied then just stop worrying, Din',t he suggested any anti inflammatory medicine for 3 days. If not take ibuprofen twice for 3 days to relieve the inflammation in muscles(It's OTC).
Thank you..
