Is Masturbation Common In A 13 Year Old Boy?

Question: This is not a health question but you are the doctor that came up when I was trying to find Dr. XXXXXXX Dobson's website to ask a question. I am a grandmother of a 13 year old boy. I am at his house every day when he comes home from school. I think he is masturbating in the bathroom every day after school. Is this something to worry about? I had two boys and one girl, just so you know I have raised boys. Is that normal? Should it be stopped. Should I tell me son? Thank you for your help. A concerned grandma.

Brief Answer:
It's a normal thing

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.
Can understand your concerns.

Masturbation is a normal process and it doesn't cause any harm to the body.
At 13 years of age pubertal maturity occurs and a child of 13 years can masturbate.
But, you have to counsel the child that he should not masturbate excessively as sperms also contains protein, so if he masturbates excessively then there will be protein loss.
In all, I think that you should not worry about this, the only thing that you have to do is to counsel him regarding excessive masturbation.

I hope this will help you.
Take care.
