Is Mucus In Stool A Cause For Concern?
Question: Dear Doctor,
For the past month, when I wipe my feces I have a bit of mucus (with no colour or brown), but just a bit.
I am very worried and nervous. I did a full sedated colonoscopy on XXXXXXX last year and everything was ok. Could this be serious? I also have internal and external hemorroids.
I look forward to hearing from you.
best regards

Hi,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.R.K and I am pleased to assist you.
Some amount of mucus in stool is normal only.
Your last colonoscopy which was done as late as XXXXXXX 2015 did not reveal anything abnormal. So there is no need to worry.
So this small small amount of mucus is not a serious issue.

Dr.R.K.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have mentioned in my previous post that some amount of mucus in stool can be considered normal.
Mucus is secreted by the cells lining the colon in all normal persons also.
Increased mucus can also be seen in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, infectious colitis etc.
As I said earlier, cancer is less likely as the colonoscopy done as late as XXXXXXX 2015 did not reveal anything.
You can go for a repeat colonoscopy if you are constipated or if there blood also in stool.
Regards,
Dr.R.K.
