Is Numbness Or Tingling Related To MS Symptoms?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Jun 2015
Question: whilst at the GP yesterday for a completely unrelated condition, I mentioned that I had had had a issue with my right foot for 2 weeks.
The top of my foot feels numb and tingling almost a creeping sensation. It is not swollen and does not hurt.
I had been sitting back on my knees the evening before for a rather long period of time and only noticed this the next morning, it may have been there previous but I had not noticed any strange feeling prior to that day. GP said that if it was the same in 4 weeks to go back but it should go on its own accord, she felt it may be a compressed nerve. Stupidly I went on to google!!!!! something I don't usually do and noticed that numb or tingling feet could be early MS symptoms, do not want to worry but would appreciate any other thoughts you may have. Have already been told that that is quite unlikely but not impossible given my age but a second opinion would be appreciated

Brief Answer:
not likely to be MS

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
While numbness and tingling can be a sign of MS, it is not that likely, especially since you seemed to have an event that triggered the symptoms. Sitting back on your knees for a prolonged period of time can cause some nerve irritation and this is the most likely explanation for the sensations that you are having. It can take nerve irritations a few weeks to months to resolve. If this had happened spontaneously without a triggering event it would be more concerning. Make sure that you are taking a daily vitamin and drinking plenty of water. Be careful about getting too anxious about things you read on the internet. There are a lot of things out there that can cause a lot of stress.
I suspect that your numbness and tingling will resolve without any treatment but if it does not you can see a neurologist for nerve conduction studies.
