Is Nutritional Approach Effective For PCOS Treatment?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: I am not sure if it is appropriate to ask this question at this forum - yet I am keen to know so posting it here. I have a chronic PCOS issue that no stream of medicine has been able to completely cure despite all diet restrictions and exercises etc... Recently I heard of Dr XXXXXXX XXXXXXX a leading nutritionist, runs The Health Awareness Centre in XXXXXXX and she is known to have a very radical approach towards health care. It is a diet centric programme she offers alongwith other principles of rest and care. What I want to know is - Has anyone heard of her methods and it's impact (though some beneficiaries said so to me)?

Brief Answer:
Chronic PCOS

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
Chronic PCOS is disorder of hormonal imbalance where androgens are produced more as what it is supposed to be in a normal women. This causes development of hirsutic features with increased bodily hair growth, acne, and darkening of neck line and knuckles called acanthosis nigricans and most importantly polycystic ovaries and anovulation further leading to infertility. Obesity and hence increased insulin resistance is known to be associated with it which prevents normal ovulation in such women hence it is advised that weight should be controlled first with diet and exercise to reduce the insulin resistance so in a way peripheral androgen production through aromatisation of fat shall reduce and ovulation may be helped. But this is not the treatment of PCOS, it just helps to reduce androgen levels. Most women do conceive if PCOS has been early with low androgen levels but in cases of chronic PCOS the main stay of treatment is low dose oral contraceptive pills which rebuilds the hormonal balance if taken continuously for about 4-6 months and hence prepare an ovarian environment with decreased androgen mileu which helps in ovulation. So after the 6 month course , the woman is advised to plan pregnancy as soon as possible.
Nutrition can be a supplement to treatment in PCOS but not remedy. Pcos is like diabetes , it can be prevented but not cured completely. So you have to understand that and work accordingly. So if your concern is pregnancy or fertility then you can opt for ovulation induction if required to get the desired result, that option is available as well.

Pertaining to your query regarding Dr. XXXXXXX XXXXXXX , nutritionist, i am not aware of her and am not sure if you would be helped more if you have already taken to diet and exercises.
Please review with lab reports and further details/ queries if you have in this regard.
