Is Pain In The Right Wrist And Hand Indicative Of Arthritis?
Question: I have extreme pain in right wrist and hand. No injury. On set about 6 hours ago for no apparent reason. Suspect arthritis. Took a Tramadol 50mg tab about 4 hours ago. it is not even touching pain. I have some hydrocodone/acetaminophen 5-325 tabs from previous injury. Would like to try hydrocodone. Pain is 9-10 on scale. Worried about interaction. Take it, yes or no. no injury.
At ER now. X-ray. Dr believes it is gout. Meds for inflammation and pain. Heading home. Thanks.

Hello,
The half-life of Tramadol is around 6 hours, so if you took it 4 hours ago, it may not be best to take hydrocodone now because the combination can cause excessive sedation.
I'm concerned in that the pain you are describing would not be typical for arthritis - to come on suddenly and so severely.
I am thinking there may be a stress fracture, ganglion cyst (these are benign) that was irritated or ruptured, or some other problem beyond osteoarthritis.
Sudden onset of severe pain warrants going in to be seen. You can go into the ER or if you wish to wait and can tolerate the pain, go into your doctor or urgent care in the morning.
But as you describe the pain as extreme, it seems prudent to go in now.
There they will get an X-ray of your wrist and do an exam and will have a better idea of what is going on based on the exam and X-ray.
So - if you haven't taken the combination of Tramadol and hydrocodone/acetaminophen before, I don't advise it now, but I do recommend going in to be seen now.
