Is Painful Swelling In The Knee And Calf After A Popping Sound In The Knee Post Injury A Serious Concern?
Question: I injured my knee last week, I heard a pop. The knee swelled and was very painful. Over the weekend the pain is much better but still hurts but is bearable and I can walk on it. Now I am having pain in the calf and having swelling in the calf. Should I apply compression to the knee and calf?
Brief Answer:
Could be a meniscal or ligamentous injury.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
In my opinion you have probably injured some internal structure in the knee joint like a meniscal tear or ligament injury. Swelling will subside in due course of time and pain will go down but that will not mean that the problem is over.
I suggest you undergo MRI of the knee to know the exact damage. In the meantime take pain killers ,HOT fomentation ( now since some days have passed), and thigh muscle strengthening exercises. The fluid from knee could have travelled to calf making it painful and swollen.
I would once again reiterate that please do not take it lightly.
Thanks.
