Is Pregnancy Possible Despite Taking Minastrin 24 Fe?

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Jun 2015
Question: Hi,

I had unprotected sex last Tuesday night. My partner did pull out and I took minastrin 24 fe 4 pills 12 hours apart for EC. The last day of my period was about 4 or 5 days before. I have a 30 day cycle on average. I was anywhere from day 8 to 11 in my cycle. What are the chances of pregnancy? I cannot have a baby now. I'm so worried! I've also had trembling hands and my temp has been 99.

Brief Answer:
Pregnancy in my opinion is highly unlikely

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Based on the provided information, the minastrin should be more than enough to prevent the pregnancy. Especially as you have taken it on time along with the emergency contraceptive, pregnancy is highly unlikely.

Even though you were around the 8th-11th day of your cycle, which are not the most fertile days; the chances of conception/pregnancy in my opinion is very very unlikely.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

I was told to take the minastrin 4 pills at a time and then again 4 pills 12 hours later for emergency contraceptive. I am not on regular birth control. I'm just very very nervous.

Brief Answer:
No need to be nervous ma'am, I am almost 100% sure you are not preggers

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

I understand your cause for concern, but please trust me, there is a nearly non-existent chance for conception and so you need not worry. For now, do me a favour and just trust me and wait till your next period which will confirm the absence of pregnancy.

Until then, why don't you keep yourself preoccupied and distracted. Time will fly and you shall soon see your period. :)

Write to me and I shall keep you company or be here to help you anytime you need me.

Best wishes.

Thank you. I used to always have ovulation pains and knew when I was ovulating and I haven't had those in the past few months. Also I have been so hot the past few days and my temp has been 99. That is not my basal body temp just my normal temp.

Brief Answer:
Such side effects can be expected ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hi ma'am.

The birth control pills along with the minastrin can cause a few changes in your basal body temperature and even your menstrual cycle (which may result in a delay in you seeing your period). All these should be expected, and so please do not panic when you experience any of these. :)

You have all really good questions, and please do not hesitate to ask me anything, I am always here for you.

Best wishes.

The only thing is I am not on birth control. Only used the minastrin for emergency contraceptive. Also, along with the absence of ovulation pain I have not experienced hardly any cervical mucous. I used to always have the ovulation pain and cervical mucous when I ovulated. I'm trusting you just still nervous ☺️

Brief Answer:
And you are still nervous, how about taking a nap?

Detailed Answer:
Hi. :)

First of all, thank you for trusting me.

Secondly, you will experience a lot of different symptoms or side effects, just do not pay too much attention to these things as they will only mess with your mind.

Now, taking all the information into consideration, your chances of conceiving are less than 2 %. Which means there is about a 97-98 % chance you will not conceive. And this is a very good number, because it is the same as using a condom. Condoms only guarantee 96-97 % protection from conception, and yet it is universally used and accepted.

So be patient, stay calm and try to think of how you are going to avoid such incidents from happening in the future by not letting your partner come anywhere close to climaxing inside of you without a condom.

For everything else, I am always here for you. :)

Best wishes.

Thank you! He usually does use a condom. We were able to get pregnant both times on the first try. I'm a natural worrier and I got to thinking about the day I was on in my cycle and I have been having panic attacks!

Brief Answer:
I too get worried quite often

Detailed Answer:
Hi ma'am.

I do also get worried quite easily, but set your mind towards what the possibilities are and what the result could be, the chances, etc. You should be able to reassure yourself that conception/pregnancy is like a drop in an ocean of chance.

I see pre-eclampsia in your history, did this result in a successful pregnancy? Do you have kids? :)

Good day.

Yes, I have a 6 year old son and 3 year old daughter. I was on bed rest for two months with my son and had my daughter at 36 weeks. I went from a petite 115 pound 26 year old to a 170 pound fluid filled crazy person! I was swollen to the XXXXXXX I had post partum depression after my daughter and it was horrible. While I have never been able to get back down to 115 I did loose most of the weight. I don't want to go through the swelling or constant worry bc of pre e, or another c section! I'm a counselor ( isn't that like the blind leading the blind? Ha) and I love my job and I cannot go through bed rest and all of that again. I love my two babies more than anything and I want to be here for them.

Brief Answer:
I can understand, these are difficult things to deal with

Detailed Answer:
Hi ma'am.

I understand, my sister-in-law also went through the same thing when she delivered about 4-5 months ago. She suffered from severe postpartum depression and is still battling weight-issues.

The main issue with the weight gain during pregnancy is due to a drop in metabolism from the long durations of being in bed or being seated or inactive. This results in fat build up and makes it very difficult to lose weight.

The goal for your diet should be to increase your metabolism by including the following:

+Eat small meals
+Eat 5-6 meals a day, instead of 2-3 meals
+Avoid overeating, this is very important
+Control the portions of your meals and stop eating while you are still hungry
+Exercise twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening; my sister-in-law considers being actively on her toes behind her child exercise, but this is not considered exercise. Go about regular brisk walks for at least 20-30 minutes a day
+Try to finish dinner by about 7 p.m. and avoid eating anything after this

Hope you can try to follow this religiously. If you wish I can try to mould a diet out for you, something my wife uses very often to lose weight before family get-togethers. :)

Best wishes.

Oh, I do those! I eat between 1000 and 1200 calories a day and I run 4 to 5 miles at the minimum 3 times a week! The lowest I have been able to get my weight back to was 129. I normally try to lower my carbs and eat lean meat when I do eat meat. The problem is I do not like fish. I only like shrimp. However, I did try blackened sea bass and it was really good. I wouldn't mind trying a new diet plan. I still just hope and pray that that small chance of getting pregnant didn't happen!!! I'd like to keep my body not swollen and healthy! ;)

Brief Answer:
We shall concentrate of averting pregnancy for now, diet later

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

So lets first wait till pregnancy is completely ruled out and then I shall send over a diet plan to you.

As the unprotected sexual contact was only yesterday (Tuesday) we still have at least a good two weeks until we can go about the home pregnancy tests to rule out pregnancy. Once it has been at least 2 weeks since the sexual contact we can go about a home pregnancy test using an early morning urine sample.

When do you expect your period? And have they been regular always? How long is your cycle?

Best wishes.

Oh no, the unprotected sex was one week ago. I usually start around the 25th of the month.

Brief Answer:
We should soon find out

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

One week, thats great. Then let's wait for another week and then go about a home pregnancy test using a urine sample (early morning urine sample), and lets us then look for the way forward from there.

The 25th is about 10-12 days away, and so although we can expect a slight delay due to the ECP's you took, it should come around the end of the month. Be patient and write to me with any concerns.

Best wishes.

I was early to show symptoms with my two children. I was very fatigued and my breast got bigger quickly. Today my back is crampy and feels like it does when I am having PMS. Sometimes I have PMS for two weeks before I start and sometimes I don't have it at all. I do know that I was NOT cramping or anything when I was pregnant with my two children. I'm not fatigued at all. I ran 4 miles last night! I know one thing for sure, that will NEVER happen again!

Brief Answer:
Hoping for the best

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am.

I am glad. Life teaches you lessons, and some have to face repercussions while learning them, just hoping you don't. All symptoms of a hormonal imbalance can be experienced even with the use of ECPs, and similar symptoms can be experienced even with pregnancy.

So no symptoms can confirm or rule out pregnancy right now except a long delayed period of course. Breasts can even grow larger during a hormonal imbalance, and so at this point of time I just want you to relax and report anything you feel is worth reporting.

Keep in touch and stay calm ma'am. I am sure pregnancy will be averted this time.

Best wishes.

Thank you. I wanted to be a doctor and still love science and medicine. I study it often. I checked my cervical position the day after the incident and it was lower than it is now and softer. I know during ovulation the cervix should be soft, high, open and wet. Hasn't been like that at all. I checked it today and it is high closed and pretty firm. It has been like this for several days. Is it too early for any of this to matter?

Haha, wow.

You seem to be eligible enough to become a doctor. It is never too late as the saying goes. But you are quite right, it is way too early for any of this to matter at this point in time ma'am. :)

Amazed and impressed. :)

Well, I asked him if he did pull out all of the way and he said he did. Then he freaked out on me and said he couldn't do this right now and I told I couldn't either and it took two to tango, you know? I don't think he would lie to me about it. Sooo that got me all down feeling! If I somehow did ovulate on day 8 or 9 wouldn't that be a super long luteal phase?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shoaib Khan (6 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes, that would be a long luteal phase

Detailed Answer:
A very good morning to you.

I understand. I am sure he is under a lot of pressure too, and hopefully he did pull out in time.

Yes, that would be a super long luteal phase. Those days were clearly not the most fertile days and without any precautions taken (I.e. without the ECP), hypothetically speaking conception would have been difficult but not completely impossible. Given the fact that you did take the ECP as per the instructed dosage and time, conception should be ruled out almost instantly.

But in such cases you never know, which is why we are going to wait till we can test and rule out pregnancy completely.

Best wishes.

We talked about it more last night and he said that he did, but now I had made him nervous. Then, I had to reassure him that there was only like a 2 percent chance anything could happen since he pulled out, I had taken the ECP, and it was a little too early for ovulation really. I don't think I have ovulated at all. I've even wondered if I have even ovulated for the past few months since symptoms that were once present regularly have pretty much disappeared. I'm really thankful to you for being so kind and talking with me about this, as I have no one I would want to share this with. And I know he freaks out worse than I do and I can't talk to him! So, thank you so much.

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

I am glad you both have each other to fall back on. But may be its best we keep all this from him until we are sure off pregnancy being ruled out.

I am more than happy to be there for you, no thanks required at all. All I wish for is your complete satisfaction and good health.

Just a few more days to go before we can rule out pregnancy. Till hen stay healthy and keep in touch ma'am. I don't need to tell you that I am always here for you, because you must already know that by now.

Best wishes.
